Read & Bead Basics
Every child that signs up for the challenge receives:
- 1 Brag Tag
- 1 necklace
- 1 reading record sheet
Readers record their minutes (or have a grown-up help them track time), then they visit the library to turn those minutes into beads of varying colors, shapes, and designs to decorate and personalize their necklace throughout the summer.
Read, Record, Redeem!
When children visit the library to turn their minutes read into beads, they have 5 levels of beads to select from:
- 15 minutes = Solid color (aka “rainbow”)
- 30 minutes = Glitter
- 1 hour = Pearlescent
- 2 hours = Glow-in-the-Dark Stars
- 4 hours = Shapes (sports balls, animals, & more!)
There are near limitless ways kids can decorate their necklaces! To demonstrate, each necklace pictured below has 5 hours worth of beads.
You Will Need...
- Beads: Select beads and assign them "minute" values.
- Bead organizer(s): Any case with divided compartments so you can separate your tags, necklaces, and beads.
- Tags and necklaces: We use SchoolLife* to purchase 30" chains and customized Brag Tags.
- Logging Sheets: Whether they're blank bubbles, empty boxes, lines, or something else, just give kids a way to track their time reading.
Pros of Going “Prizeless”
- Minimal space: Our tags, necklaces, and beads all fit in two organizers measuring ≈ 13"L x 11"W x 2.5"H.
- Low cost: Our total for Summer 2025 will be ≈ $0.76 per child.
- Word-of-Mouth: Kids wear their necklaces outside of the Library and tell others about all the reading they’ve done and the beads they’ve selected!
- Leveling the playing field: No matter how much a child reads, they can still collect beads. No raffles, no competition, no pressure!
