Story: Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington

Each page has bright, bold characters and objects that the kids can recognize.  The page with the text is always surrounded with ingredients or related items for each step, opening up discussion about making food, travel, etc.  A winner with a younger crowd!

Clapping/Puppet Rhyme: There's Something in the Orchard (adapted from The Kiboomers)

You will need a bag to "hide" the puppets in.

There’s something in the orchard
What can it be?
What can it be?
What can it be?
There’s something in the orchard
What can it be?
Listen and we’ll see…
Moo… Moo
What animal makes that sound? (Cow!)
That’s right!  A cow it what I found!
(Make animal noise together)
Go through several animals, clapping and singing the rhyme each time.

Story:
Milo Armadillo byJan Fearnley

A bit longer with a moral that the kids didn't really grasp.

Fingerplay: Five Hungry Ants (from Jbrary)

Five hungry ants marching in a line,
Came upon a picnic where they could dine.
They marched into the salad,
They marched into the cake,
They marched into the pepper…
Uh oh! That was a mistake!
A..a..a..choo!
Four hungry ants marching in a line… (etc)

Closing Song: Tickle the Clouds

Craft: A is for Apple (from Mom to 2 Posh Little Divas)

Supplies:

  • Red square paper
  • Brown square paper
  • Letters a (lower case)
  • Glue bottles
  • Foam leaves

Kids tore up the red and brown paper to make a collage of paper scraps on their letter "a."  Leaves were then added to the stem!
