Story: Going Places by Ross Collins

We were lucky and had a few older kids in the group so they really grabbed onto the idea of this book and using imagination to think outside the box.  Every kid in the "Going Places" contest gets the same go-cart kit, but two kids combine their kits to make something more extraordinary.

Story: Stuck by Oliver Jeffers

A very silly story perfect for our active group today.  A young kid's kite gets stuck in a tree and he starts throwing things at it to try and knock it down (including a ladder and a fire engine!).  As the items got more and more ridiculous, the kids started laughing harder. 

I kept asking what other ideas they had, either in general or for the items presented in the story.  Several kids had great ideas!  Additionally, when he finally got a saw (and tossed that into the tree too), one girl mentioned that you should definitely not throw saws.

Craft: Play-doh

Once a month in lieu of a storytime craft we create with Play-doh.  As soon as a brought out my "example" (a can of Play-doh) the kids went wild and start shouting things like, "I love Play-doh!"  I tied in our "ideas" theme nicely and encouraged everyone to be very creative!
